Omo Valley by air-road-air 4 – 8 days’ itinerary
The lower Omo Valley is home to some dozen tribes, each distinctly peculiar in its culture.
You may cut the journey by two days taking a scheduled flight to and from Arba Minch. (Jinka airport is still under construction and when complete, that would also allow cutting the time even more significantly.)
Take an Ethiopian Airlines scheduled flight to Arba Minch. Visit Chencha, village of the Dorze known for extraordinary hand-woven cotton products as well as their elephant-head looking tall houses. You may as well experience the production of “Kocho” staple bread amongst “Enset” (false banana) growing cultures.
By road, you may visit the following tribes: Konso, Tsemai, Ari, Bena, Mursi, Karo, Hamer, Geleb/Dassanech, Bume, Arbore.
Accommodation will be in lodges and/or hotels everywhere. Driving back to Arba Minch, you will take a scheduled flight back to Addis.
Omo Valley by road 8 – 12 days’ itinerary
To visit the lower Omo Valley, all by road, you may take the road to Arba Minch in a relative relaxed pace by staying an overnight around Lake Langano or Hawassa and reaching Arba Minch the second day. From Arba Minch, you may visit a selection of tribes by road.
Accommodation will be in lodges and/or hotels everywhere. To get back to Addis, you may either take the same route driving to Arba Minch and from there proceeding via the Rift Valley Lakes area or via Soddo-Hossaina highway back to Addis. Again, there is the option of returning to Addis via Yabelo & Yirgalem. In addition to the possibility of meeting each tribe in its respective settlement/village, we will also consider synchronizing the markets so as you will see the more active daily life of the people.
These tribesmen are pastoralists or semi-pastoralists, depending on their cattle for their subsistence and attached to their locality firmly.

“One of the only companies that can organize the Erta Ale – Danakil tour in 3 days because Avraham, one of their driver and our excellent guide, is able to cross the no man’s land between these two points. Well maintained vehicles and excellent service. Un des seuls tours opérateurs qui peut organiser le tour Erta Ale – Danakil en trois jours car un de leurs chauffeurs, Avraham, un super guide, est un des seules à connaître les pistes entre ses deux points. Véhicules en bon état et excellent service…”
I am about to travel to Ethiopia again.
This time travelling south to Awassa, I beleive we are to travel the 275kms by raod and then stay 2 nights in the city, staying in the Pinna Hotel….
John G.Excellent organisation and top driver in a fantastic country
The tour organised what exactly as described. The driver and the 4×4 were of the highest standard. Cook was excellent. Ethiopia is a wonderful country and Horizon travel sould be your first choice among tour operators
Visité en janvier 2016.
“You have to see North and South”
It was an unforgettable journey, we have seen the interesting historical places in the North and the real, original life of Africa in the South when we visited the different tribes.
Joseph was an excellent driver, we felt save the whole time and appriciated his helpful assistance.
The itinerary was well balanced and we like to Thank Mr. Getachew and Joseph for the acceptance of the one or other “deviation” from the program to fulfill our wishes.
So we can recommend the company Horizon and in particular Driver Joseph.
I hired a 4wd for two weeks from Horizon in order to visit the Omo Valley. The vehicle was as described, in good condition with working ac. My driver (Joseph) was extremely hardworking and patient, despite putting him through some very long driving hours and uncomfortable conditions. He had an excellent knowledge of all the places I wanted to visit, spoke reasonable English and helped a lot with local translation and negotiation. The price was very competitive and the owner (Yenealem) included camping equipment with no extra charge. I would totally recommend this company for 4wd hire.
